When .com wins and when .ai is worth the premium
March 22, 2026 · Sub Editor at Den
Dynadot reported 65% of investors prioritize .com. Yet Vegas.ai near $70K and AgenticIntelligence.com at $150K show non-.com and descriptive .com both win when buyer intent matches. Use a decision tree, not tribal loyalty.
Choose .com when
- You want maximum outbound pool (startups post-funding upgrades).
- Hold time exceeds three years; renewal stability matters.
- You sell to US and EU enterprises that default to .com trust.
- Liquid exit paths include GoDaddy closeouts and DropCatch backorders.
Consider .ai when
- Buyer is pre-revenue AI startup showing .ai in pitch deck now.
- Exact .com is eight figures or unusable legally.
- You plan flip under eighteen months, not generational hold.
- Geo or category .ai has verified comps (Toronto.ai, Vegas.ai bands).
Premium math
If .com costs $25K and .ai costs $2K, startup may buy .ai first. Your job as investor: own the .com they upgrade into, or flip .ai with hard renewal cap. Never comp AI.com $70M to your hand-reg without buyer identity match.
